Allah Ta’ala says in the Noble Quran, ‘You are the best of nations sent to man. You command good and forbid evil and you believe in Allah’. (Surah Āli Imrān)
One reason for this Ummah being entitled as the best of Ummah, is the practice of commanding good and preventing evil’.
Rasūlullah (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) states, ‘Whosoever from among you witnesses evil; he should change it with his hands. And if he is unable to do so then he should change it with his tongue. And if he is unable to do so with his tongue, then he should at least consider it to be wrong. And this is the weakest stage of Imaan. (Mishkāt Sharīf)
Hadhrat Nu’mān bin Basheer says that Rasūlullah (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) gave an example of a group of people sailing on a boat having an upper deck and a lower deck. The people from the lower deck require water and request water from the people of the upper deck. The people from the upper deck refuse water so the people from the lower deck decide to make a hole on the floor of the ship and get water from the sea. Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) said, ‘If the people from the upper deck don’t stop the people at the bottom from making a hole, the ship will sink and everyone will drown. (Mishkāt Sharif vol. 2 p. 436)
Similarly, if people do not prohibit evil and sin in society, the entire society – innocent and evil – will equally suffer.
The above quotations of the Quran and Ahādīth of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) are clear that commanding good and prohibiting evil is an emphasized injunction of Allah and His Rasūl (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam). Every person must carry out this injunction.
The Sahābah (r.a) spent their entire lives in commanding good and prohibiting evil. Since our beloved Rasūl (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) is Khatamun Nabiyyīn, every Ummati of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) is the deputy of Nabi (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) and he has to carry on the mission of Rasūlullah (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) .
THE OBJECTIVES OF THE TABLEEGH JAMAAT
It should be noted that when the effort started, Hadhrat Ml Ilyas (r.a) actually named the effort as ‘TAHREEKUL IMAN- THE EFFORT OF IMAN’, the aims and objectives of the Tableeghi Effort can be explained in the following words of Hadhrat:
“The objective of the tableeghi movement is to teach the Ummah جميع ما جاء به النبي that is to bring within the Ummah the teachings of Islam and its practical way of life. This is the main objective, and as far as the going out in the path of Allah and all the other activities pertaining to the Tableeghi Effort, they are mere essentials to achieve the main objective. The six points are the elementary subjects of this effort. That also is a fact that our caravan (i.e. the tableeghi Jamā’at) can only go out and knock on the conscience of people and take them out of their slumber of negligence, as far as their reformation is concerned, it is the responsibility of the Ulamā and pious people of their respective localities. The actual work of Amr Bil Ma’roof Wa Nahi Anil Munkar-encouraging righteousness and forbidding evil, can only be successful if done by people of that community, especially those who are involved in the various efforts of Deen. “
THE PURPOSE OF IJTIMAA
Ijtimā, as itself is not the objective. The actual objective is that by means of the Ijtimā every single person of the community or country becomes punctual upon his five daily Salāh, each person’s life is in adherence to the commands of Allah and the teachings of Rasūlullah (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam). Hadhrat Mufti Kifayatullah Shb (r.a) used to say that the purpose of the Ijtimā is Tawbah. The aim of the Ijtimā is to create an atmosphere which is conducive to the betterment of Deen, therefore the success of the Ijtimā relies upon the amount of Jamā’at that goes out in the path of Allah and the amount of deen that becomes part and parcel of each individual’s life.
Being involved in this Mubārak effort is actually safeguarding one’s well-being and success in this world and the hereafter. Our pious predecessors used to say that the effort of Tableegh is similar to the ship of Nooh (Alayhis Salaam). Hadhrat Ml Zakariyya (r.a) would constantly encourage his close ones to take part and encourage this effort and he would also tell them if they cannot support this Mubārak effort the least they should do is not to oppose and interfere with it.
HOW TO MAKE THE IJTIMAA SUCCESSFUL
Ijtimā takes place to emphasize upon the importance of Tableegh, as Tableegh is the engine through which the caravan of Deen moves forward. The foundation of Deen is faith, conviction and Salāh; therefore by means of Tableegh and Dawah, these various branches of Islam will come to life. It is important that prior to the Ijtimā that an all-out effort takes place by the local brothers within their respective communities to prepare Jamaats to go out in the path of Allah.
Today with the grace of Allah Ta’ala the effort of Tableegh has reached the four corners of the world; irrespective of ethnic differences or language, the tableeghi Jamā’at endeavours to take the Kalimah Tayyibah to each individual, so that they may be blessed with the fruits of Imān and may bring the entire Deen of Allah Ta’ala within their lives. Verily, this is the effort of Rasūlullah (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam), in this very manner he used to approach individuals, tribes and his own family and he would tell them:
يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ ، قُولُوا لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ تُفْلِحُوا
O’people! Recite the Kalimah and you will be successful.
May Allah Ta’ala make the Ijtimā successful and may it be a means of hidayah (guidance) for all the Muslimīn of South Africa and the entire world.
