THE INTEGRITY OF IMAM BUKHARI رحمه اللہ
Once Imam Bukhāri رحمه اللہ had to sail on a boat, he had a thousand gold coins in his possession. Later on he was joined by a stranger who gradually became his friend. Imam Bukhāri happened to mention the large sum of money that he was carrying. The next morning the stranger raised a hue and started screaming that his bag containing a thousand gold coins is missing. The passengers and crew started investigating and searching everyone on the boat.
Imam Bukhāri رحمه اللہ immediately understood the mischief of the stranger and realized that he was trying to con him; therefore the respected Imam threw the bag of money into the river. The imam’s belongings were also searched but the money couldn’t be found. Finally, everyone reprimanded the stranger. When the journey was over, the stranger approached Imam Shb and asked: “why did you dispersed of the bag of money? After all you lost everything.”
The respected Imam رحمه اللہ replied: “I spent my entire life collecting and compiling the Ahadith of Rasūlullah i, and my integrity has assumed a proverbial proportion. A taint upon my honour and integrity will make me lose my entire life’s hard work, therefore how could I afford myself to lose the great wealth of knowledge and Hadith for a mere thousand gold coins.
IBRAHIM BIN ADHAM رحمه اللہ
The royal bed of Ibrahim Bin Adham, the ruler of Balkh was decorated with rose petals each night. One night the maid servant was tempted to lie on it for a while. Unfortunately she soon fell asleep and was shaken out of her sweet slumber by the whip of the king. She stood up staggering and speechless.
The king cried: ” How dare you sleep on the royal bed?”
She was speechless for a moment, then burst out laughing. The king was furious and inquired the cause of the unusual laughter.
She replied:” I had merely slept for a while on the royal bed and I have received a taste of your whip on my frail body, I wonder what punishment you will receive from Allah for sleeping on this bed every night.”
Ibrahim was struck by the reply of his maid as he was truly living a life of disobedience and negligence. Under the impact of this revelation he gave up many of his royal comforts and pleasures, henceforth he devoted much of his time to the welfare of his people and worship of Allah Ta’ala.
Once whilst he was praying he heard a noise on the roof of his palace, he went upstairs and found a person in search of something. He asked:” what are you searching here?
The man replied: “I am looking for my camel.”
King Ibrahīm burst out laughing! “Are you mad? You are seeking for your camel on the roof of the royal palace!”
The man said: “Then you must be madder than me, as you are seeking Allah in the comforts of your palace!”
This incident had a deep impact on Ibrahīm, and from king Ibrahīm he became Ibrahim the Wali of Allah.
